This is according to the management at Kenya Railways (KR), which says the services are continuing in earnest.
“Monday’s train which left Mombasa at 6:40 hrs hauling 38 wagons (76 TEUs) arrived at the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi at 16:40 hrs,” said Management.
The move comes as the railways offered shippers a three-month promotion by halving its freight charges.
The promotion that will run up to April 5, 2018, will see shippers charge Sh25 000 to transport a 20-foot container and Sh30 000 for a 40-foot container from the Inland Container Depot to Mombasa.
KR is charging a subsidised rate of Sh35 000 to transport a 20-foot container and Sh40 000 for a 40-foot container from Mombasa to Embakasi Inland Container Depot (ICD).
Normal rates of Sh64, 500 for a 20-foot container and Sh84, 300 for the 40-foot container will come into effect in April.
