M1 and Federation Bridge to re-open after months of delays

In celebration of Transport Month, the city of Johannesburg, together with the Johannesburg Roads Agency will be re-opening the M1 Oxford and Federation Bridge on the 3 October 2017.

The R127 million rehabilitation project, which included rehabilitation of a section of the M1 highway, Oxford Road Bridge and Federation Road Bridge, boasts a 3km stormwater drainage system.

The project was originally meant to be completed by February 2017, but due to labour unrest and geotechnical problems, the project only entered its final stage of completion early May.

The opening of the project will open up traffic, which had been changed from two lanes going each direction on the northbound side, to the southbound side of the highway due to the rehabilitation.

Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, the MMC for Transport said, “A quality road network and service delivery are an essential element of our vision to grow a prosperous and thriving Johannesburg that is able to attract much needed investment to move people, goods and services effectively across the city.”
